IOSH Courses

About IOSH

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is one of Europe's most recognised health and safety bodies. As an independent, not-for profit organisation, their aim is to regulate and steer the health and safety profession by providing expert and impartial guidance. It is often consulted by the UK government departments for members' views and opinions on draft health and safety legislation and codes of practice.

IOSH Courses

There are 3 main IOSH courses available, which can only be delivered by health and safety training providers accredited by IOSH. These are the IOSH Managing Safely, IOSH Working Safely and IOSH Directing Safely certificates.

IOSH Managing Safely Certificate

IOSH Managing Safely Courses by ATC Risk Management

The most popular IOSH course is the IOSH Managing Safely certificate, which is typically a 4-day course, and is aimed at any manager or supervisor in any organisation in any sector, to give them the knowledge to handle health and safety issues currently or potentially faced by their employees. The IOSH Managing Safely course is comprised of 8 modules, which are:

  • Introduction to managing safely
  • Assessing risks
  • Controlling risks
  • Understanding your responsibilities
  • Identifying hazards
  • Investigating accidents and incidents
  • Measuring performance
  • Protecting our environment

At the end of the Managing Safely course, there is a written and practical assessment. Delegates who pass are awarded the IOSH Managing Safely certificate.

IOSH Working Safely Certificate

IOSH Working Safely

For those without any managerial or supervisory responsibilities, the IOSH Working Safely certificate provides a grounding in the essentials of health and safety, and is made up of the following 5 modules:

  • Introducing working safely
  • Defining hazard and risk
  • Identifying common hazards
  • Improving safety performance
  • Protecting our environment

The IOSH Working Safely course also has a written and practical assessment at the end, and an IOSH certificate is awarded to those who pass this assessment.

IOSH Directing Safely Certificate

IOSH Directing Safely

Also available is the IOSH Directing Safel course, which is aimed at company directors of organisations with up to 250 employees, and usually lasts no more than 1 day. It aims to ensure that those at the most senior level of the organisation appreciate health and safety for their staff at work.

Like the other courses, there is a written and practical assessment at the end of the course, with IOSH Directing Safely certificates awarded to those who pass.
